1.What Ethical framework do you use?
In my framework, balance is the goal.  This incudes balance among the following obligations that are always in my mind:

 a.  Student learning is my priority.  Ethically, I have an obligation to create a fair and equal learning environment.  That means I must help all students work to the best of their ability. If students appear to have learning problems, I would refer them to Student Accessibility for assessment and referral.  If they have emotional or behavioral problems, I would refer them to counseling or medical care.  Any problem that might interfere with student learning I would attempt to refer the student to the best help.

I must also hold students to academic standards in learning and behavior.  That means I report any dishonest academic work; I do not excuse irresponsibility in attendance and time requirements–all of which would be denoted in the syllabus at the start of class.

Ethically, I also attempt to not only impart the lessons and expectations of the class, but I have a responsibility to impart critical and creative thinking skills through both deductive and inductive methods, as well as challenging and supportive communication.

 b.  I must enforce university rules and regulations.  (Legal)  I would consult with my supervisor or any available source of information to resolve challenging issues.

  c.  I must uphold State and Federal obligations. {Legal]  This is rarely a concern since the university functions within these laws.

  d.  Lastly, I have an ethical obligation of self care and honesty so that I can meet the demands of my professional requirements and teaching contract.

2. How shall a teacher take reasonable disciplinary action in exercising the authority to provide an atmosphere conducive to learning?

To maintain a conducive atmosphere to learning while exercising authority during student discipline, several factors inform my philosophy and behavior.  These include my respect for students and my knowledge that learning cannot occur when a student is experiencing fear and anxiety.   Therefore, discipline must occur with privacy and clear and open communication.

The student must understand how he/she has violated the rules of academic honesty,  or classroom expectations or behavior.  The teacher must treat the student with respect , firmness and support so that the student has a “door” to walk through in order to improve behaviors and realize that he/she can make changes and not feel ashamed or embarrassed.   The student must understand that he/she is supported by the teacher and that heir privacy has not and will not be violated.

If a group of students in the class disrupt the class, the teacher has several levels of intervention.

1.  One is to inform the disruptive students that their behavior is not conducive to their peers’ learning and their teacher’s teaching.

2.  Another choice of intervention with a disruptive student or students, is to elicit the support of other students in the class to provide feedback, either orally or in body language, to the disruptive students.

3.  A third alternative is to escort the student or students out of the classroom with a meeting afterward to understand the motivation for the behavior, and to create a contract of behavioral standards.  This may also include referring the student to his/her counselor.

4.  A fourth alternative is to call security to remove the student.

5.  A last alternative is to drop the student from the class.  This would be unfortunate because it is in opposition to my priority, which is student learning.

Nevertheless, classroom management is important so that all students feel safe as well as having a classroom where they can have peak learning experiences and make contributions to their and other students’  class experience.
